Description

A forgotten cellar with a brick barrel vault was re-discovered during renovation work at the Town House, Corfe Castle in December 1992. The sandy floor of the cellar was covered in an even layer of debris 0.1m thick on average and containing a large amount of pottery and glass. The pottery and glass were collected and filled a tea chest. The pottery was analysed by Jo Draper and almost all appear to fit a date range of 1790-1800, shortly before the construction of The Town House. The site is marked as a fuel house in a map of 1769 and the cellar may have been a fuel store prior to the construction of the Town House at which point it appears to have been abandoned.
