Description
The Christchurch Antiquarians website (http://www.communigate.co.uk/dorset/xchurchantiquarians/page5.phtml) accessed on 8/10/2008 records that members of the The Christchurch Antiquarians conducted a GPR survey across a woodland bank during May 2004.
The radar results suggested anomalies at a depth of 2m and so a trial trench was opened across the bank measuring 1.5m x 6.5m and excavated to a depth of 0.8m below the top of the bank. The excavation took place over the weekend of the 19th and 20th March 2005.
No structure to the bank was recognised during the excavation and the only finds recovered were a couple ofclay pipe stems and brick/tile.
It was concluded that the bank was an 18th-19th century landscape feature associated with Highcliffe Castle, and that the GPR anomalies were caused by natural features.
No locational information for the bank or trench across are supplied other than they were in the Steamer Point nature reserve.
