Description

A survey of the fabric and carvings on the tower of St Mary’s Church was undertaken in 2001-2002 by Alan Graham, during restoration works. The tower was constructed in the early 16th century of Oolitic limestone and with hamstone carvings. Periodic maintenance was carried out, but by the later 19th century, its condition had deteriorated. A major period of restoration was carried out in 1877-8, when some of the oolite was replaced by Ham Hill stone. The pinnacles were replaced and new statues added into the then empty niches of the lower tier of the tower.
