Description
A trial trench measuring 2.75 m (9ft) long, 0.5 m (20ins) wide and 1.07 m (3ft 6ins) deep was dug beneath the flagstone floor of the cottage at 10 Chancery Lane in January 1977 by Jim Chaplin. This trench was excavated at the suggestion of the owner, who had found a well in the yard behind the cottage in 1976.
The upper part of the trench appears to have comprised disturbed fill, which was not recorded, though some finds were recovered from it. At the southern end of the trench apparently natural yellowish subsoil was encountered. This appeared to have been cut away to the north by a feature filled with dumped brick, tile, slate and mortar debris, which was traced to a depth below floor level of 4ft. To the north was possible redeposited natural mixed with darker soil. The relationship with the feature filled with building rubble is uncertain.
