Description

Two hand-dug trenches measuring 2m by 1m across were excavated by Wessex Archaeology in the yard to the rear of the former Fire Station, South Street in December 1995, in advance of redevelopment. Trial Trench 2 lay to the east and revealed an L-shaped section of wall, possibly the SE corner of a building. It was composed of rough limestones in cream mortar. There was some evidence for a possible rebuilding of this structure. This building was tentatively dated to the late medieval/early post-medieval period.
