Description

‘A photographic survey and archaeological watching brief were carried out [by AC Archaeology] at the site of the former Johnson’s Yard, South Street…during February, June, October and November 1997.’ The exterior architectural details of existing buildings were photographed. The observation of groundworks revealed a small number of undated and post-medieval archaeological features surviving on the margins of the site. A large part of the site, including the South Street frontage had been severely truncated in the 20th century. Two possible latrine pits and a linear ditch at the northern end of the site remain undated but may represent the rear boundaries of Long Street properties. Possible post-medieval occupation along the eastern edge of the site was represented by an undated pit and a possible 18th century terrace.
