Description
AC Archaeology conducted a second stage of trench evaluation, during 1995, at the former Foster’s School playing field site, Tinneys Lane in an attempt to clarify the extent and density of Neolithic and Middle Bronze Age deposits identified in stage 1 of the evaluation.
The work comprised the excavation of three trenches, none of which revealed Neolithic or Bronze Age deposits. The only subsoil features identified were considered to be modern. Artefacts of medieval to modern date were recovered from the topsoil and subsoil. The absence of prehistoric features within this additional area has helped to clarify their likely extent (1).
Trench A measured 25m x 1.6m and was oriented approximately NE-SW towards the NE corner of the field. 0.25m of topsoil overlay 0.12m of orange-broen silty clay subsoil. No archaeological features were identified in this trench.
