Description

The RCHM conducted excavations immediately to the west of Sherborne Abbey Church during 1949 in order to ascertain if there was evidence for the previous existence of a west axial tower. ‘the excavation revealed the massive south-west angle of the tower and a portion of the outer edge of the foundation of the west wall near the axial line.’ (2) Fragmentary remains of masonry within the west end of the present nave suggest that this tower might be of 10th century date (1).
