Description

ASI Heritage Consultants carried out an examination and recording of the uncleaned fabric of the North Transept of Christchurch Priory Church during August to December 2003. This revealed extensive 19th century alterations to the palimpsest of Saxon, medieval and post-medieval fabric. The possibility of survival of a portion of Saxon fabric in the SE corner was revealed. An archaeological watching brief was maintained during repair works which confirmed the assessment and recording of mortar and stone types, re-used stone, architectural detailing and specific areas where the fabric is failing.
