Description
Observations were carried out in early 1967 by Christopher Sparey Green during works on straightening a section of the Bradford to Dorchester road just to the southeast of Poundbury Camp. The southern side of the road was cut back between 1.5-3.0m for a distance of about 180m between Poundbury Camp in the west towards the railway line in the east. A 4m wide feature cut into the chalk running roughly NE-SW was found about 60m southeast of the hillfort (at NGR SY68299093). It was filled with grey-brown loam, which became sandier towards the centre and contained some gravel and flints. The gravel may have been derived from the Roman road which is projected to run immediately adjacent.
The results of this watching brief have been included in the published monograph on the main excavations at Poundbury (1) and the site record included within the archive of these excavations (2).
