Description
Keith Jarvis undertook a small trial excavation during 1977, at the rear of East Anglia Building Society (site X16), due to curtailed plans for a small area excavation in advance of grading for a car park. The trench was 1m wide and consisted of two parts 9.5m and 7m long.
The excavation revealed that c. 1.4m of topsoil overlay natural gravel. A 12th-13th century rim sherd and several post-medieval sherds were recovered from the topsoil. The only feature was an undated ditch 2.4m wide and 0.6m deep aligned roughly E-W at 60 degrees to the trench. This alignment is at variance with most boundaries in the area, although the ditch may be turning or it may be related to ditch A to the west.
