Description

Christopher Sparey Green observed the excavation of a service trench from the rear of Tudor Arcade, south along the narrow lane down to Charles Street, some time in 1957. Midway along the lane a deposit of dark grey brown soil over 1-1.5m thick was observed. The lower levels contained large fresh sherds of Roman pottery and rubble. The pottery included a large sherd of a late Roman 'frilly rim' storage jar of post AD250 date. No structural remains were observed.
