Description
In January 2000, two small trial trenches were dug under archaeological supervision and recorded by Steve Wallis of the Dorset County Council Archaeology Service. Trench 1 to the north was 1.25m by 0.65m across and 0.5m deep. It revealed 0.25m of brown soil overlying a >0.25m thick deposit of dark soil with rubble inclusions including brick, chalk and slate. Trench 2 to the south was 1.1m by 0.7m across and 0.5m deep. It revealed a layer of dark soil 0.1m thick overlying a deposit of darker soil containing rubble, over 0.4m thick. The dark soil and rubble layer was interpreted as spoil dumped during the construction of County Hall in the 1930s. It contained some Roman and post-medieval pottery.
