Description
A site visit was conducted by J. Rigg of the Ordnance Survey Archaeological Division on the 20 August 1954 at South Court, Dorchester. This was the site of the discovery of Roman coins exhibited by Mr. A Pope. At the same time Rigg interviewed Col. Drew, curator of Dorset County Museum, who said:
Mr A Pope was an FSA, and if he had found a hoard of coins they would have been reported. I have seen several Roman coins which I believed were picked up from time to time by his gardeners. The “bag” would refer to the receptacle he carried them in.
He also interviewed Mr Pope, the then resident of South Court:
I have never heard of any single find of a number of coins, but there are several Roman coins in the house which were found in the grounds and collected by my grandfather, Mr A Pope [1].
