Description
Archiva Archaeological Services conducted an archaeological watching brief during the excavation of groundworks on land adjacent to Aztec Renault, Compass House, The Grove, Dorchester, over three days between the 27th and 30th June 2006. The work was conducted as a condition to planning permission being granted for a forecourt extension.
A sequence of topsoil, overlying a mixed levelling deposit, overlying natural chalk sediments, was observed. The levelling deposit probably relates to landscaping activity associated with the construction of a bungalow adjacent to the site in the 1960s. Four redeposited sherds of Roman pottery were recovered from the modern topsoil and levelling layer. The levelling layer covered an undated linear feature, probably a ditch or gully, cutting the natural chalk. A single flint flake was found on the surface of this feature.
