Description
Following excavation at Greyhound Yard in which the remains of post-pipes pertaining to the Dorchester Neolithic Timber Monument had been uncovered, it was decided to re-examine an excavation carried out in 1983 by the CEU at the former Egg Packing Station on Church Street where two similar pits had been recorded. Because the site was still open re-examination became possible in September 1984.
The clearing of a non-calcareous silty soil at the base of the trench revealed that there were parts five neolithic post-pits in this trench. When taken with the arc of pits excavated at Greyhound yard it suggested a circular monument of closely set wooden posts approximately 380m in diameter. A charcoal deposit from the base of one of the post pipes at the former Egg Packing Station had previously been dated to c.2100BC [1].
