Description

Inhumations were found in 1886 during the excavation of cellars for the semi-detatched pair of Houses 'Devon Lodge' and 'Calder' on the NE side of Icen Way. The burials were found in various postures in the bottom of a wide trench in the chalk. A blue glazed 'melon' bead and 30 hobnails (DCM 1886.9.19, Hogg collection) are probably from this site, as are a BBW bowl with flanged rim and an undecorated BBW cooking pot. The most notable object is an olive-green lead glazed jar of the 1st-2nd century AD with seven irregularly spaced groups of repousse bosses.
