Description
December 1915 two burials in stone coffins, and one in a lead coffin, were discovered whilst constructing a road and surface water drain at the PoW camp, Poundbury, Dorchester.
The first burial was only 2ft below the grass and cut from a single block of Ham stone. The two stone coffins were left in situ but the lead coffin was lifted and damaged in the process, although two pieces of it eventually found their way to Dorchester Museum [1].
Other traces of ancient burials were found during the construction work. One of these was the skull of a child buried with a Roman-British necklet of 3 ply twisted bronze wire. Another skull and other bones were found at the bottom of 'V' shaped ditch [2].
