Description

C.J.S. Green observed the excavation of drain and foundation trenches for the new mortuary, south of the chest clinic at Dorchester County Hospital, Dorchester during 1962. A 3ft wide, N-S aligned ditch was observed for 20ft within the trenches. Two post-holes, perpendicular to the ditch but set 20ft from it, may be associated with post-holes previously observed at the N end of the boiler house (PDNHAS, 80, 102). A pit west of the ditch contained frequent good quality painted wall plaster with patterns of grapes and foliage; a brooch nearby was probably of Claudian date. Other mid 1st century finds form the area included a 'Hod Hill' type brooch and sherds of white flagons. A stone lined drain was traced for 7ft to the south of the site.
