Description

During 1965 C J S Green observed the excavation of an electricity or telephone cable trench N-S across the east side of the present Top o' Town roundabout. This exposed what appeared to be a thin layer of gravel resting upon a causeway of chalk underneath the modern road that has been interpreted as a road heading for the west gate of Dorchester though to be in this location in 1965 [1]. either side of the causeway the Roman town ditch was observed. It was not clear however, whether the causeway was of natural flint or a deposit of flint rubble for a later road filling the town ditch [2].
