Description

C J S Green observed an exposure of chalk about 100ft west of the top of the Roman town rampart at Colliton Walk, Dorchester during 1967. A ridge of chalk was observed, although the outer scarp was not seen. This is suggestive of multiple ditches or valla outside the rampart which presumably ran down to the meadows at the bottom of The Grove where Roman burials have been found. The ridge is likely to be the chalk between the outer and middle ditches of the Roman town defences.
