Description
Wessex Archaeology undertook a programme of archaeological evaluation and excavation along the line of the A37 Western Link road in advance of road construction, between Autumn 1987 and March 1988.
Trench J was excavated parallel and immediately adjacent to the south side of the Dorchester to Bradford Peverell road. It lay adjacent to Trench I to the south. Two small gullies oriented N-S and NW-SE were found. These were extremely shallow, ephemeral, undated features. A small slot cut into the northern baulk of the trench revealed two layers of flint gravel metalling, which may be part of the Roman road from Dorchester to Ilchester, which is thought to run along the line of the present Bradford Peverell road.
