Description

The foundation trench for a rear extension at 39 Prospect Road, Dorchester was inspected by S. Wallis of the Dorset County Council Archaeology Service in September 1994. The trench was 1.4m deep and was cut through a concrete surface beneath which was a greyish silty soil about 0.5m thick, which overlay natural chalk. A number of 19th/20th century sewer pipe trenches filled with greyish silty soil were encountered. In addition one other feature was noted. It ran parallel with the back of the house, about 4m away and partly within the NW end of the trench. It was at least 1.9m deep, and was filled by a greyish silty soil. No trace of a sewer pipe was found and no dating evidence was recovered.
