Description

The discovery of Roman tesselated pavement was made in the spring of 1898 in the back garden of 47 South Street when the house was being pulled down in order to build new offices (since replaced by Woolworth's) [1][2]. It may have been part of the same floor discovered at the south wall of Cedar Park in 1895, having the same pattern (red lattice on grey ground with border of four alternating red and grey bands). A length of subway running parallel with South Street was also observed [2][3].
