Description
In December 1947 Miss P A M Keef noticed that builders, in cutting back an earth face prior to the construction of a right-angled brick retaining wall at the SE angle of the County Offices, had revealed in section a plaster floor covered with a thin scatter of burnt material, immediately beneath which was sealed a shallow gully or pit and also a deeper pit or ditch of sagging U-shaped profile with somewhat undercut sides which was filled with black earth. These features were thought to be Romano-British in date. The exposed sections were drawn and photographed prior to being sealed up by the wall. (1)
Subsequent excavations revealed that the floor and pit were actually 12-13th century or later in date. (2)
