Description
Several finds were made in 1947 & 1948 by workmen engaged in digging foundations for a new boiler-house and massive brick wall at Crabb's motor workshops in Trinity Street.
From the boiler house excavation two tall, narrow-necked 17th century glass bottles were recovered in perfect condition as well as a nearly complete Samian ware bowl (form 37) decorated in relief with a freize containing bird and animal motifs, which had evidently been complete until broken during the progress of the work.
Fragments of masonry and brickwork were observed by the workmen about 8 feet below ground level in some of the pier foundation holes dug for the brick wall, and two coins were found; a sestertius of Trajan (AD 97-117) and a typical radiate coin of Tetricus (AD 270-273) and a bronze finger ring.
The objects are in the possession of Mr Crabb.
