Description

During the exceptionally hot and dry summer of 1896,a number of parchmark features were noted at Poundbury Camp (1). The line of a track was noted running eastwards from the east entrance, but was thought to be modern. Outside the eastern side of the defences, a further 'vallum' was noted, but this may be the remains of the aqueduct. In the interior, a concentric scorch mark interpreted as a bank or 'dwarf vallum' was found around the upstanding round barrow in the SW corner. The remains of a rectangular building about nine metres (30ft) square were noted just to the NE of the barrow. The date of this structure is uncertain.
