Description

In 1963, Christopher Sparey Green observed the laying of a new drain to the rear of the Home and Colonial Supermarket (formerly Thurman's) to the Charles Street sewer. The drain trench ran along the south side of the rear yard, where it cut through a layer of charcoal and fallen wall-plaster 0.75m (2.5ft) below the surface at a point about 6m (20ft) west of Charles Street. The plaster lay face down in a fairly solid mass. The plaster retained elements of two different designs; a blue circular band enclosed by red lines on a white ground, and imitation marbling of black and white flecks on a red ground. No structural remains were encountered. It cannot be determined whether the plaster was the remains of a building which had burnt down in situ, or was dumped debris from somewhere else.
