Description
During the summer of 1965 part of the old gasworks was converted into workshops for the Leeline Carbody Repair Company. Although this entailed little building work it necessitated the clearance of an area 100ft square occupied by the easternmost of the gasometers (centred on 69579060). This work was observed by Christopher Sparey Green.
No remains of ancient occupation were exposed during the demolition and levelling, but along the whole of the E. side where the site abutts the rampart of the Roman town (now Salisbury Walk) a mass of chalk rubble and brown loam at least 4 to 5 ft deep was revealed in section above the natural chalk. This feature, evidently the tail of the rampart, was visible for a distance of 100ft from 69599060 to 69579063
