Description
Excavation prior to the development of Glyde Court was undertaken on behalf of the DNHAS in July 1966 (1) (2). The excavations exposed parts of two Roman buildings; a Roman town house (Building 1) of which three rooms with simple mosaic pavements were exposed, and part of another building (Building 2) on the same alignment. The relationship between these two buildings was not determined and they may be part of the same house. Portions of these buildings had been excavated in the 1880s. Buildings 1 and 2 were probably built in the mid or later 4th century, and probably continued in use until the late 4th or early 5th century.
The site had been heavily disturbed by gardening and modern activity. No occupation or destruction levels survived above the floors. The remains of the Roman building were left in situ and there was no investigation beneath the floor levels, so no evidence for any earlier activity on the site was found.
