Description
Observations conducted by Christopher Sparey Green during excavation of a gas mains trench along Charles Street and Durngate Street in 1979.
No ancient road metalling but a series of undisturbed levels identifying structures of Roman town. Northwest trench face exposed two main phases of chalk floor and make up over occupation levels; in south east face, shallow foundation of flints and mortar, above deeper cut chalk feature, possibly edge of pit. In centre of Durngate Street was area of heavy burning on surface of old ground surface. Chalk floor levels similar to structural deposits found in northwest in 1968.
