Description
Steve Wallis of Dorset County Council Archaeology Service conducted a watching brief during groundworks for an extension to the SE corner of Colliton House in April 1998.
There was generally 0.3-0.4m of dark soil containing modern rubble overlying the natural chalk. One deeper cut feature was present, containing a piece of recent brick.
The groundworkers had retained two large sherds of Roman greyware pottery with incised decoration.
It is known that there had previously been an extension to Colliton House on this site and the rubble within the soil may date from its construction and subsequent demolition. Roman deposits may have been removed at this time.
