Description

ASI Heritage Consultants conducted an archaeological evaluation in advance of proposed redevelopment of the site of The White Hart pub in Dorchester, during May 2004. Three machine excavated trial trenches located within the forecourt and enclosed rear yard of the White Hart pub in Dorchester revealed extensive modern and post-medieval disturbance in the SE corner of the site and extensive modern services across the rest of the site to a depth of 0.5m. Trench 2 contained a post- medieval wall parallel to the road and set back 7m from it, with an associated yard surface. Three pits also contained post-medieval pottery and brick. One of the pits cut the edge of a layer of compacted gravel and cobbles lying on grey alluvial silt which contained abraded amphora fragments.
