Description

Wessex Archaeology undertook excavation of the area proposed for the construction of a new vicarage for St George’s Church, Fordington, in the lawn in front of the previous vicarage building, during July and August 1982. Three areas were investigated. Excavation area A was in the middle of the lawn of the 1895 vicarage. No archaeological features were revealed and it was clear that the area had been severely landscaped and the chalk terraced away, possibly in 1897. Finds dating from the Roman period to the 19th century were found in the topsoil and included some human bone fragments.
