Description

A desk-based assessment of the area of the Phase II West Dorset Hospital site in Dorchester was undertaken by BUFAU in November 1993. The assessment report provides a brief summary of known and expected archaeological features within and around the development area. No archaeology has been previously recorded from the site, but the line of a postulated early Roman road croses the site. The site lay within the open fields of Fordington and was in more recent times used as allotments. There is no record of any pre-hospital buildings on the site. The ground surface has been severely disturbed or destroyed during landscaping associated with the phase 1 hospital development.
