Description
In November 1993, The Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit undertook an evaluation within the grounds of the West Dorset District Hospital, Dorchester in advance of the second phase of development.
Five machine-excavated trenches and one long exposed section were examined. No archaeological features pre-dating the 19th century have survived the extensive landscaping works.
Trench 4 was located in the SE corner of the site and aligned N-S in order to cross Trench 3. It measured 18m x 1.6m and was machined to a depth of 1.4m. Several modern features, including three brick-lined drains and a ceramic land drain were exposed at a depth of 0.7m.
