Description

In November 1993, The Birmingham University Field Archaeology Unit undertook an evaluation within the grounds of the West Dorset District Hospital, Dorchester in advance of the second phase of development. Five machine-excavated trenches and one long exposed section were examined. No archaeological features pre-dating the 19th century have survived the extensive landscaping works. Trench 2 was located to intercept the postulated alignment of the pre-urban military approach road. It measured 14.5m x 1.6m and was machined to a depth of 0.6m, exposing the natural chalk, which was overlain in places by patches of modern rubble. The Roman road was not seen.
