Description
AC Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the former Lott and Walne Foundry site, Fordington High Street, Dorchester, in June 1997. This comprised the machine excavation of three trenches outside the existing building and four hand-excavated trial pits within it.
Trial pit 6 measured 1.3m x 1.1m and was hand excavated to a maximum depth of 1.2m against the west internal wall of the Foundry building. It was excavated as an extension to a geotechnical pit. A number of deposits were observed, including a possible floor surface and brick wall footings. The stone slab surface sealed a dark grey-black clayey silt, 0.2m thick containing one Romano-British and one medieval sherd of pottery. This lay above possibly natural pale grey clay. The stone slab surface may be equivalent to the lower surface observed in Trial pit 5.
