Description

AC Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the former Lott and Walne Foundry site, Fordington High Street, Dorchester, in June 1997. This comprised the machine excavation of three trenches outside the existing building and four hand-excavated trial pits within it. Trial pit 5 measured 1.2m x 1.1m and was hand excavated to a maximum depth of 0.9m against the north internal wall of the Foundry building. It was excavated as an extension to a geotechnical pit. A number of deposits, including possible surfaces, were observed. A rough surface of limestone slabs was recorded at a depth of 0.6m-0.7m. This sealed a layer containg 3 sherds of post-medieval pottery, which itself lay above a second stone slab surface at a depth of 0.9m. The excavation was abandoned at this point due to flooding.
