Description

AC Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the former Lott and Walne Foundry site, Fordington High Street, Dorchester, in June 1997. This comprised the machine excavation of three trenches outside the existing building and four hand-excavated trial pits within it. Trench 3 measured 6m x 0.6m and was machine excavated to a maximum depth of 2.3m within the former yard area. No archaeological features were observed, modern layers existed to a depth of 1.2m below which a 0.75m thick layer of dark grey clayey silt, probably of alluvial origin and containing RB pottery and tile. Natural chalk was encountered at a depth of 2.35m.
