Description
AC Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation the former Lott and Walne Foundry site, Fordington High Street, Dorchester, in June 1997. This comprised the machine excavation of three trenches outside the existing building and four hand-excavated trial pits within it.
Trench 2 measured 10m x 0.6m and was machine excavated to a maximum depth of 1.9m along the line of a proposed foundation trench at the north east end of the former yard area. No archaeological features were observed. Modern layers existed to a depth of 1.8m, the natural chalk lay at 1.9m. Clean silts and gravels above the chalk may be alluvial.
