Description

AC Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of the former Lott and Walne Foundry site, Fordington High Street, Dorchester, in June 1997. This comprised the machine excavation of three trenches outside the existing building and four hand-excavated trial pits within it. Trench 1 measured 10m x 0.6m and was machine excavated to a maximum depth of 2.8m along the line of a proposed foundation trench at the east end of the former yard area. The trench contained a single archaeological feature at the southern end, an undated ditch 2m wide and over 0.8m deep with steep sloping sides.
