Description
Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation on land within the area of the former Eldridge Pope Brewery on the south side of Dorchester. Five machine-dug test pits and two trenches, one 6m and the other 20 m in length, were excavated at various points, according to access, to provide an assessment of deposits across the site and any likely levels of truncation.
Trench 8 measured 20m long (E-W) and 2m wide and was excavated at the east end of the site in a vacant yard adjacent to the railway. Here 0.3m of made ground directly overlay a clean chalk surface at 67.66m OD. The archaeology seems to have been completey truncated as a result of the construction of the railway.
