Description
Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation on land within the area of the former Eldridge Pope Brewery on the south side of Dorchester. Five machine-dug test pits and two trenches, one 6m and the other 20 m in length, were excavated at various points, according to access, to provide an assessment of deposits across the site and any likely levels of truncation.
Trench 3, a machine excavated test pit measuring 2m x 2m, was located toward the SW part of the former brewery site, 40m NE of Trench 2. 2.3m of Made Ground (primarily chalk rubble), overlay a well preserved soil profile of grey/brown silty clay ploughsoil and a pocket of dark-mid brown silty clay subsoil filling a solution hollow in the chalk surface which lay at 67.39m OD. Post-medieval brick and tile were observed in the spoil from the ploughsoil horizon.
