EDO4167 - Eldridge Pope Brewery Site, Weymouth Avenue, Dorchester, Evaluation Trench 3.

Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation on land within the area of the former Eldridge Pope Brewery on the south side of Dorchester. Five machine-dug test pits and two trenches, one 6m and the other 20 m in length, were excavated at various points, according to access, to provide an assessment of deposits across the site and any likely levels of truncation. Trench 3, a machine excavated test pit measuring 2m x 2m, was located toward the SW part of the former brewery site, 40m NE of Trench 2. 2.3m of Made Ground (primarily chalk rubble), overlay a well preserved soil profile of grey/brown silty clay ploughsoil and a pocket of dark-mid brown silty clay subsoil filling a solution hollow in the chalk surface which lay at 67.39m OD. Post-medieval brick and tile were observed in the spoil from the ploughsoil horizon.
