Description

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of the former St John Ambulance Hall, North Square, Dorchester, during February 2000. Four hand-dug test pits (Trenches 1-4) were excavated (1) (2). Trench 3 measured 1m x 1m and was excavated at the SE corner of the former St John Ambulance Hall to a depth of 1.2m with a small sondage in the NW corner to 1.6m. Natural deposits were not reached. Below 0.1m of topsoil lay a 0.45m thick layer of 20th century rubble representing made ground associated with the construction of the St. John Ambulance Hall. Below this lay a series of 19th century soil and rubble layers, which were not bottomed, which may be associated with the construction of the Houses on Orchard Street.
