Description

Terrain Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation of the former St John Ambulance Hall, North Square, Dorchester, during February 2000. Four hand-dug test pits (Trenches 1-4) were excavated (1) (2). Trench 1 measured 0.75m square and was excavated to a maximum depth of c.1.2m in the NW corner of the site in a narrow area between the St. John Ambulance building and the rubble retaining wall along the edge of Friary Lane. Below 0.1m topsoil and 1.0m of 20th century demolition debris, a stone flag floor was recorded with 0.05m of coal dust and fragments above it. THis is probably the remains of a house shown on the 1880 Ordnance Survey 1:500 map.
