Description

A desk-based assessment was undertaken on the site of the St John Ambulance Hall, North Square, in January 2000, as part of a development proposal. The assessment indicates the site lies immediately to the south of the possible line of the northern defences of the Roman town. Given the substantial evidence for Roman buildings in the vicinity it is likely that similar buildings could exist on the site. During the medieval period the site is in the grounds of the Friary. The existence of houses along the Friary Lane frontage has been established.
