Description

Excavation by C E Bean to investigate an area where stones had been repeatedly dragged up during ploughing. This revealed the remains of a substantial stone building. The ploughed-up stones came from the southern end of the building which had also been robbed, and little but the foundations remaind. More substantial walls survived at the northern end, along with the remains of a flue and ashy layers. The building was around 82 feet long by 24 feet wide. Remnants of a Keinton stone floor were recorded in the north-west corner, and rubble layers suggested that the building had been levelled. Finds of Roman date were recovered.
