Description
In September 2005 Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of land proposed for redevelopment at the rear of Dorchester Post Office, 43 South Street, Dorchester.
Trench 4 was within a garage in the NW part of the site. It measured 1.5m x 2m and was excavated to a maximum depth of 0.28m. A length of wall, constructed of limestone, sandstone and chalk blocks set in a sandy mortar, was recorded in the southern half of the trench. No finds were recovered but the wall continues under Trinity Street, and is almost certainly Roman in date. The wall had been cut by a modern inspection pit and N-S aligned wall.
