Description

In September 2005 Wessex Archaeology undertook an archaeological evaluation of land proposed for redevelopment at the rear of Dorchester Post Office, 43 South Street, Dorchester. Trench 2 lay in the southern part of the courtyard behind the Main Post Office building, and to the south of Trench 1. It measured 2m x 3m and was excavated to a maximum depth of 1.06m. Two post pits (0.35m-0.4m deep) and a truncated pit or shallow scoop (containing late 3rd/4th century AD pottery in its upper fill) were recorded on the northern side of the trench. One post pit was sealed by a layer containg late 1st-2nd century AD pottery, and the other contained 2nd-3rd century AD pottery in its fill. The wall of a possible cellar or air raid shelter and a modern pit were recorded in the southern side of the trench.
